    Days 1–2 · Osaka

    Osaka arrival and food neighborhoods

    Recover from arrival and organize reservations before moving west.

    Day 3 · Hyogo

    Himeji Castle with adequate time

    Visit the castle and adjacent garden; steep stairs and queues make it a poor half-hour stop.

    Okayama, Kurashiki and the Uno gateway

    Use Okayama as a rail base, then stay near the correct port if an early island ferry is essential.
